Jacob Batalon didn't have an agent when he recorded his first audition tape for Marvel Studios. He was finishing his studies at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and sent in a tape without much hope. He landed the role of Ned Leeds in Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, and his life changed completely in just two weeks of filming.
It took off in a flash.
Born in Hawaii in 1996 to a Filipino family, Batalon grew up far from the spotlight in Los Angeles. He studied music theory before moving to New York to try his luck in acting. His initial contract with Marvel secured him appearances in five films of the franchise, including the two massive Avengers events in 2018 and 2019.
In 2021 he appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, a production that earned 1,900 million dollars at the worldwide box office. But behind the cameras, the actor was looking for an identity of his own that didn't depend solely on being the hero's best friend. That search led him to make drastic decisions about his image and his professional future.
Before filming began on the third installment of Spider-Man in 2020, the actor went through a severe physical transformation. He lost about 50 kilos through a strict diet and daily high-intensity training. His new look surprised fans of the franchise and forced the screenwriters to slightly adapt his character's presence on screen.
The industry slapped him with a label that's hard to shake.
In 2022 he landed his first leading role on television with the series Reginald the Vampire. He played a vampire who broke the usual aesthetic conventions of the fantasy genre. The show ran for two seasons on Syfy before being canceled in 2024. Batalon then turned his focus to genre films to diversify his résumé.
In 2024 he starred in the horror film Tarot, directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg. In this movie he played Paxton and moved away from the purely comedic tone that brought him worldwide fame. The film's budget was just eight million dollars, a tiny figure compared with the Disney standards he was used to.
And the gamble paid off.
During that same 2024, he worked alongside Kevin Hart in the action film Lift for a streaming platform. Jacob Batalon has said in several interviews that he is interested in executive producing to control the kinds of stories that reach the screen. For now, though, his career remains tied to supporting roles with strong narrative weight in major studio productions.
In 2024, the film Tarot brought in about 50 million dollars at the global box office. The actor keeps his residence in New York and avoids Hollywood social events unless a promotional contract requires him to attend.
