Angourie Rice didn't need an acting school to understand the rhythm of dark comedy. In 2016, she stole every scene of The Nice Guys from Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe at just fifteen years old. It wasn't a stroke of luck or a chance discovery at a shopping mall.
Her parents, a director and a writer, raised her amid scripts and rehearsals in Melbourne. So the set was her natural habitat long before she finished high school in Australia. In 2013, she starred in These Final Hours, and that apocalyptic film was her direct ticket to the Cannes Film Festival.
The interest of major studios was immediate.
Shane Black cast her as Holly March because they were looking for someone who didn't seem like a typical California child actress. Rice held her own in comedic scenes opposite two global stars without missing a beat. She made her character the moral engine of the story rather than a mere secondary decoration used to humanize the leads.
But the industry often typecasts young faces in fast-consumption franchises. Rice entered the Marvel universe in 2017 to play Betty Brant. She appeared in all three Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland, and gave the character a retro air reminiscent of mid-century newsrooms.
And the gamble paid off.
Unlike other child actors, Rice avoided scandals and abrupt shifts into forced adult roles. In 2017, she worked under Sofia Coppola on The Beguiled, where she shared the frame with Nicole Kidman. That shoot in Louisiana confirmed that her acting style relied on restraint and silence rather than histrionics.
Her real breakthrough came with prestige television. In 2021, she played Siobhan Sheehan in the miniseries Mare of Easttown. For this role, she had to hide her Australian accent and develop a dry, raw vulnerability alongside Kate Winslet.
Critics praised her ability to carry emotionally intense scenes without resorting to easy tears. Rice prefers the camera to catch what she is thinking before she says it. In 2022, she led the cast of Honor Society and made it clear that she could carry the full weight of a production on her shoulders without help from established names.
In 2024, she took on the challenge of inheriting the role of Cady Heron in the new version of Mean Girls. The movie grossed more than $100 million worldwide but divided audiences because of its musical nature. Rice defended the project with an exhausting promotional tour that included stops on major U.S. talk shows.
That work ethic is constant.
Rice balances her film shoots with an active literary career. In 2023, she published her first novel, Stuck Up and Stupid, co-written with her mother. It is a modern reinterpretation of Jane Austen's work set on Australian beaches that reflects her own cultural interests.
Filming for her part in the series The Last Anniversary wrapped in 2024 under the production of Blossom Films. The production had an estimated budget of 20 million Australian dollars and was filmed entirely in Sydney.
