The gaze that defined an era

Lisa Kreuzer wasn't looking for the camera when she started in the avant-garde theater of the 1960s. Her angular face, capable of holding uncomfortable silences, immediately fit with a generation of directors who wanted to break away from the past of the German film industry.

In 1974, she shot Alice in the Cities.

That film launched a period of constant collaboration with Wim Wenders, where she was far from a mere supporting player. Her presence balanced the male melancholy of the leads through a naturalness that seemed improvised.

But her relationship with the director affected her public image for a time. Many critics saw her only as Wenders' muse (they were married between 1974 and 1978) and overlooked her ability to build complex characters on her own.

In 1977, she appeared in The American Friend alongside Dennis Hopper. It was her definitive breakthrough into the international market, although she preferred to keep her roots in European auteur cinema.

From New German Cinema to television

The industry changed, but her method didn't. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, German television was her main refuge. She appeared in long-running crime series such as Derrick and Tatort, where she honed a far more restrained and direct acting style.

Size of the role never mattered to him.

In 2014, Wes Anderson called her for The Grand Budapest Hotel, because he was looking for that Central European authenticity that only veterans of the old school still embody. That brief appearance brought back the spark in the eyes of international casting directors.

Years later, she regained the interest of younger audiences thanks to the series Dark. In 2017, she played the elderly version of Claudia Tiedemann in the Netflix production. It was a work of technical precision that demanded perfect physical and gestural continuity with the other actresses who played the same character.

And the gamble paid off.

Maturity and technical rigor

In 2022, she appeared in the series La Emperatriz, bringing dramatic weight to a highly stylized period production. Her ability to convey authority without grand monologues remains her greatest asset in front of the camera.

In 2023, she worked on the TV drama Die Konferenz under the direction of Matti Geschonneck. The production focused on the restraint and historical rigor of its script.

Lisa Kreuzer lives in Munich and chooses her projects based exclusively on the strength of the script.
