Julia Dietze was born in Marseille in 1981 with a genetic mix that explains her knack for languages. Her father is German illustrator Mathias Dietze, and her mother has Danish roots. She grew up in a home where art was the everyday language of the living room.
Before stepping onto a set, she trained as a ballet dancer. That physical discipline shows in the way she moves in front of the camera, something that stood out in her early work on German television in the early 2000s. Her first real break in film came in 2002 with Fickende Fische.
And the risk paid off.
In 2012, her name made international headlines for a premise many considered suicidal. She starred in Iron Sky as Renate Richter, a teacher at a Nazi colony on the dark side of the Moon. The film was partly funded through crowdfunding and grossed 8 million dollars worldwide despite its limited release.
That shoot in Australia and Germany required her to work in English professionally for the first time. But the actress did not get stuck in science fiction parody. She sought projects with more dramatic weight in her home country while Hollywood began calling.
In 2014, she appeared in Bullet alongside Danny Trejo. It was a low-budget production shot in Los Angeles that gave her a feel for the pace of major American independent studios. Dietze has always preferred being on set to walking the red carpets in Berlin.
You know the real work happens between takes.
During 2019, she returned to her best-known role in the sequel Iron Sky: The Coming Race. The shoot was difficult and suffered several financial delays that pushed back the release for years. That same year, she also took part in the ensemble film Berlin, I Love You, sharing the bill with names such as Helen Mirren.
In 2021, she played Dorothea in Plan A, an intense drama about Jewish revenge after the Holocaust. The film was shot on locations in Germany and Ukraine under the direction of the Paz brothers. The film received positive reviews for its visual rawness and the historical rigor of its script.
Two years later, she appeared in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, an Amblin Entertainment production directed by André Øvredal. In 2024, she joined the cast of the German series Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten, playing Julia Moreno. The contract for this TV production was signed for a block of episodes filmed at the Potsdam-Babelsberg studios.
