Iris Berben was born in Detmold in the summer of 1950 and ended up expelled from several boarding schools before coming of age. That youthful rebelliousness marked her entry into film in West Germany in the late 1960s. She wasn't after stardom, but the camera soon picked up a photogenic quality that blended the toughness of the North Sea with cosmopolitan elegance.
In 1968, she made her debut in the short film Der nächste Herr, dieselbe Dame.
That first experience in Munich connected her with the creative avant-garde of a city trying to shake off the weight of its past. Berben didn't limit herself to acting. She actively took part in student protests and used her visibility to support political causes that many of her colleagues preferred to ignore for fear of losing contracts.
During the 1970s, her face became a regular fixture in television productions looking for a fresh take. But it was in 1984 that her career changed, thanks to the sketch comedy show Sketchup. There she worked alongside Diether Krebs and learned that comedy is a serious matter that demands almost surgical precision.
And the gamble paid off.
Berben avoided being typecast by choosing scripts that made the middle class of the era uncomfortable. In 1994, she took on the role of Detective Rosa Roth in the series of the same name. She played that character for nearly twenty years and shot a total of thirty-one episodes until the production ended in 2013.
That stability on television allowed her to finance personal projects and maintain a creative independence that was rare in the European industry. For her, success was never about red carpets (an environment she has always kept at a distance) but about control over her own time and her characters.
Many actors of her generation disappeared from the screen once they turned sixty. Berben did the opposite. In 2010, she became president of the German Film Academy and began selecting projects with a clear political charge. Her commitment against antisemitism and the far right earned her several institutional honors, which she always accepted with composure.
In 2022, she appeared in the film Triangle of Sadness directed by Ruben Östlund. Her role as Therese, a woman who can only repeat a single phrase after suffering a stroke, put her back on the radar of global critics. It was a physical performance in which silence weighed more than any dialogue from her younger years.
But the pace didn't slow down after that success at Cannes.
In 2023, she starred in Paradise for Netflix. In this sci-fi thriller, she played Sophie Theissen, the cold director of a company that trades in years of life. Filming took place in Berlin and Lithuania, with a budget that allowed high-end visual effects to simulate the digital aging of the characters.
In 2023, she also premiered the film 791 km, directed by Tobi Baumann. The story unfolds almost entirely inside a taxi during a night trip between Munich and Hamburg. The production team used an LED screen system to shoot the exteriors in a controlled environment inside a studio.
