Ben Becker was born in Bremen during the winter of 1964. He grew up in a household where silence was a scarce commodity and scripts piled up on the kitchen table. His family tree carries as much weight as his deep bass voice, since he is the son of actors Rolf Becker and Monika Hansen.
The shadow of his stepfather, Otto Sander, was decisive in his development. He did not seek audience approval; instead, he tried to survive in a lineage of performers who did not understand art without physical risk. In 1991, he received the Adolf Grimme Award for his work in television, which allowed him to choose his own path.
The stage shows no mercy.
In 1995, he shot Schlafes Bruder under the direction of Joseph Vilsmaier. The film was a hit in Germany and gave him a level of visibility that he himself tried to undermine with much darker projects. Becker prefers the messy realism of complex characters to the polished perfection of textbook leading men.
His relationship with theater is almost religious. In 2015, he premiered Judas, a monologue in which he confronts the audience in spaces that are often churches or cathedrals. There are no sets, because his presence fills the emptiness of the central nave of any church.
And the gamble paid off.
Music is his other obsession. Becker doesn't sing in the traditional sense, but he recites with a rhythm reminiscent of the old interwar cabarets. In 2007, he released the album Nocturama, and since then he has alternated concert hall tours with European film shoots.
Yet his public image has always been tied to a brutal honesty that has cost him more than one clash with the German press. In 2010, he took part in Habermann, a war drama that grossed more than two million euros in the Central European market. There, he played Koslowski with a restraint few expected from such a volcanic actor.
Becker can't sit still.
In 2022, he was part of the cast of Ich bin’s, Ihr Schicksal, a introspective project reflecting on his own career. His ability to hold the camera's gaze remains intact despite the passing decades and the changes in digital production models.
In 2024, he took part in the documentary Die Unbeugsamen 2 – Guten Morgen, Ihr Schönen, directed by Torsten Körner. The project was shot with Arri Alexa cameras and received public funding of more than one million euros to document the lives of women in former East Germany.
