Meret Becker was born in Bremen in 1969, but her identity is tied to the neighborhoods of Berlin, where art is chewed up with smoke and urgency. The daughter of actors Monika Hansen and Rolf Becker, she grew up in a home where scripts were left on the kitchen table next to cold coffee.
Her debut came at age five on the children's show Rappelkiste. It was no child's play but the start of a total immersion in a craft that forced her to live with other people's eyes on her from childhood.
She never asked for permission.
Being the stepdaughter of the towering Otto Sander and the sister of Ben Becker could have overshadowed anyone. But Meret used that environment to develop a language of her own that blended acting with an almost circus-like musical ability.
In 1997, the German industry embraced her for her role in Rossini. That Helmut Dietl film earned her the German Film Award and put her on the desks of Europe's most powerful producers.
But mainstream film wasn't enough for her energy. Meret needed the direct contact of the stage and the metallic sound of her musical saw, an instrument she plays with almost surgical precision in her cabaret shows.
German audiences took a while to come to terms with that rawness.
So she alternated big-budget shoots with tours of small venues where she sang tracks from her album Noctambule. That duality kept her safe from the easy labels the press tried to pin on her during the nineties.
In 2015, she took on the challenge of playing Inspector Nina Rubin in the legendary crime series Tatort. It was a decision that changed her relationship with a mass audience during almost a decade of nonstop work in Berlin.
Although the series was an undeniable success, she decided to leave the project in 2022. She wanted to reclaim time for other artistic forms and to keep the character from irreversibly consuming the actress.
The industry didn't always understand her rhythm.
In 2023 she appeared in the film 791 km directed by Tobi Baumann. In this project she played Marianne in a story that takes place almost entirely inside a taxi during a snowstorm between Munich and Hamburg.
By 2024, her professional commitments centered on recording audio pieces and occasional collaborations on public television. Her contract for her last international production included a six-month exclusivity clause that limited her appearances at events outside the Schengen Area.
