Heidelinde Weis died in Villach at the age of 83. It was in November 2023, and the cause was a sudden fatal heart failure.
Her career began at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna in the late 1950s. She made her professional debut at the Theater in der Josefstadt and soon moved into film with a mix of fragility and authority that was rare at the time.
She was one of the most recognizable faces on German television for decades.
In 1964, she starred in Die Tote von Beverly Hills. The film competed at the Cannes Film Festival and gave her access to the top tier of the European market. But Weis never let herself be seduced by the Hollywood lights (although she received offers) and preferred the stability of the studios in the Federal Republic of Germany.
During the 1960s and 1970s, she landed one role after another in productions such as Lausbubengeschichten and Der Lügner und die Nonne. Her ability to hold the frame without artifice made her a safe choice for directors of the era. She appeared in more than one hundred productions across film and television over the course of her life.
In 1975, she decided to try her luck in music.
She recorded the album So sing ich, and the result surprised even the most skeptical critics. She won the Goldene Europa award in 1976 for her work as a singer. Her lyrics explored everyday life with an ironic tone that broke away from the perfect-woman image Hollywood had imposed on her.
But her private life called for a break that nobody expected.
At the peak of her career, her husband Hellmuth Duna was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Weis decided to scale back her public appearances to care for him for nearly twenty-five years. That decision kept her out of leading roles in big-budget commercial films.
Even so, she took part in mass-hit series such as Derrick and Das Traumschiff. In 2008, she filmed the Vietnam episode of the cruise series, and in 2010 she appeared in Rosamunde Pilcher: Liebe am Horizont. She never fully retired from acting.
She published her autobiography, titled Das Glück hat Flügel, in 2022. In the book, she recounted her battle with cancer and how she coped with grief after the death of her husband in 1998. The text avoided sentimentality and focused on the practical realities of surviving professionally in a market that quickly forgets older actresses.
The actress died in a hospital in Carinthia after being admitted for severe circulatory problems.
