Jeff Goldblum stands six foot two, and that physical frame nearly cost him his career in the 1970s. New York casting directors didn't know where to put such a skinny, jittery guy who seemed to move at a different speed from everyone else in the cast.
In 1974 he debuted in Death Wish, playing a small-time thug. He had no memorable lines, but his presence was unsettling by the standards of the time.
And the gamble paid off.
Robert Altman signed him shortly after for Nashville in 1975 because he saw something in him that no one else could define. He wasn't the classic leading man of the decade or the funny supporting player. Goldblum was a rhythmic anomaly who chewed on his words before spitting them out.
David Cronenberg gave him the role in 1986 that changed how the industry saw him. In The Fly, he played scientist Seth Brundle, and did so beneath layers of latex that couldn't hide his ability to convey extreme vulnerability.
The film grossed 60 million dollars and put him on the radar of major Hollywood studios.
But Goldblum never wanted to be a conventional action star. He preferred characters who talked too much or had strange theories about how the world works. So he specialized in being the smartest man in the room.
In 1993, Jurassic Park arrived. Steven Spielberg trusted him to bring Ian Malcolm to life, and the actor took the chance to improvise many of his most famous gestures. The success was so massive that the image of Goldblum with his shirt unbuttoned became a fixture of global pop culture.
He signed a two-million-dollar contract to reprise his role in the 1997 sequel.
In the years after Independence Day in 1996, the actor decided he didn't need to chase box office top billing obsessively. He focused on smaller projects and his passion for club music.
He has played the piano since he was a boy in Pittsburgh.
In 2018 he released his first jazz album with The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra. His concerts at Los Angeles venues are regular dates where he spends more time chatting with the audience than following the original score.
Wes Anderson found in him the perfect ally for his cinema of symmetry and pastel colors. In 2004, he appeared in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and returned in 2014 with a brief but pivotal role in The Grand Budapest Hotel. His way of speaking fits the pinpoint precision of those scripts.
In 2024, he played the Wizard of Oz in the film adaptation of Wicked. He took on the challenge of a big-budget musical after decades of moving between the edges of auteur cinema and Marvel franchises.
He lives in a house in the hills of Los Angeles with his third wife and their two children. The actor had his first child at the age of sixty-two.
