Danny Glover didn't start on a stage. Before stepping onto a film set, he spent years working in San Francisco's city government. He took part in the student protests of the late sixties, and that political awareness never left his way of understanding cinema.
In San Francisco, Glover grew up amid strikes and rallies. His entry into acting was late by Hollywood standards. He was already 33 years old when he made his debut in Escape from Alcatraz in 1979 alongside Clint Eastwood. It was a brief role, but it got casting directors to take notice of his imposing presence.
And the gamble paid off.
Steven Spielberg gave him his big break in 1985 with The Color Purple. Glover played Albert Johnson, a dark and cruel character who was a far cry from the hero image audiences would soon associate with him. On that shoot he proved he could carry the weight of a dense drama without batting an eye.
In 1987, Glover took on the role of Roger Murtaugh in Lethal Weapon. He was 40 years old when he delivered the line about retirement that would be repeated for decades. The chemistry with Mel Gibson was so powerful that the film redefined the rules of buddy cop movies.
But massive success did not pull him away from his principles. While he was filming multimillion-dollar sequels, Glover financed independent projects. In 1990, he starred in To Sleep with Anger by Charles Burnett. It was a small production in which Glover also served as executive producer to make sure the story of a middle-class Black family reached theaters.
The industry typecast him, but he had other plans.
He alternated blockbusters like Predator 2 with socially committed cinema. In 1991, he played a truck driver in Grand Canyon, a film that examined the social fractures of Los Angeles. Glover always preferred characters with mud on their boots.
At the turn of the century, his career took a more introspective turn. He worked with European and Asian directors, seeking stories that stayed off California's commercial radar. In 2004, he appeared in Lars von Trier's Manderlay, and in 2010 he shot Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives in Thailand under the direction of Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
In 2019, Glover returned to his native San Francisco to shoot The Last Black Man in San Francisco. He plays a grandfather who watches gentrification devour the neighborhood where he grew up. It is a restrained performance that sums up five decades of work in front of the camera.
And recognition came late.
In March 2022, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented him with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. The statuette honors his work off screen in support of civil rights and social justice around the world. The private ceremony was held at the Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles in front of 500 guests. The gala was not broadcast on television, and Glover accepted the award with a speech focused on the importance of community organizing.
