David Cross was born in Georgia and spent his childhood moving from place to place because of family debts. That rootlessness fueled a comic rage that finally exploded in Boston clubs in the late 1980s.
In 1995, he co-created the show Mr. Show with Bob and David with Bob Odenkirk for HBO. It was a sketch series in which the internal logic of the jokes was twisted to the point of absurdity.
And the experiment worked with critics.
But the general public still didn't know his face. Cross wrote for shows like The Ben Stiller Show, where he won an Emmy Award in 1993. He worked behind the scenes while his style grew more political and less willing to please the average viewer.
In 2003, he landed the role that defined his career in mainstream television. He played Tobias Fünke in Arrested Development. He was a character who couldn't notice the sexual double meanings in his own lines (an analyst and therapist who called himself an analrapist).
The show was canceled in 2006 due to its low ratings. But DVD sales and the arrival of digital streaming platforms gave it a second life years later.
Cross never hid his contempt for certain aspects of the industry. In 2007, he agreed to appear in the film Alvin and the Chipmunks for purely financial reasons. He admitted it in several interviews without any professional shame, because he needed to pay his mortgage.
Prestige didn't matter to him as long as the paycheck was big enough.
In 2013, he returned to the role of Tobias for the new seasons produced by Netflix. The shoot was chaotic, and audience reception was much cooler than during the original run on Fox.
During the 2010s, he balanced independent film with stand-up tours loaded with social criticism. In 2016, he premiered the special Making America Great Again, in which he dissected American politics with notable aggression.
In 2023, he appeared in the film You Hurt My Feelings under the direction of Nicole Holofcener. It was a supporting role but key to the tone of the dramedy (a production that cost about 12 million dollars).
But his work didn't stop at independent film.
In 2024, he joined the cast of the fourth season of The Umbrella Academy to play a character named Gene Thibodeau. Filming of these final episodes wrapped in Toronto after several months of intensive production.
The production company invested more than 15 million dollars per episode in that final season.
