Synopsis of The Tudors

In 16th-century England, Henry VIII is a young, handsome and powerful king with a great appetite for pleasure, who leaves much of the business of government in the hands of his advisers. His trusted man, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, persuades him to keep the peace with France, and both monarchs meet in Calais to sign a treaty of friendship. Meanwhile, the pressure to produce a male heir begins to make him doubt his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. Created by Michael Hirst, the series airs on the premium cable network Showtime and stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the monarch in a story of ambition, desire and political tension at court.

Trivia about The Tudors

In April 2007, the BBC announced that it had acquired the exclusive U.K. broadcast rights to the series.
At the 2007 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, the series won for Outstanding Costumes and Outstanding Main Title Theme Music.
Production on the third season began on June 16, 2008, in Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland.
According to the review aggregator Metacritic, the first season received 64% positive reviews.
The premiere of the first season in the United States drew almost 870,000 viewers.
About 80% of "The Tudors" was shot at Ardmore Studios and the remaining 20% on location in Dublin, with sets built to make up for the lack of native Tudor architecture.
The casting of Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Henry VIII drew criticism for his lean build and dark complexion, far from the traditional image of the red-haired, heavyset monarch.
Showtime renewed the series for a fourth season in April 2009 and announced it would be the last; Michael Hirst attributed the decision, among other factors, to the collapse of the dollar and the high cost of production.
