Henry Cavill was born on the Isle of Jersey in 1983. His professional debut came in The Count of Monte Cristo in 2002, but the industry took a decade to give him real space. Before becoming a global star, he collected a list of rejections that would have sunk anyone.
In 2005, he came close to becoming James Bond. The producers of Casino Royale weighed him against Daniel Craig right up to the last minute. In the end, they decided Cavill was too young for the character. The producers wanted an actor who looked more weathered by the years.
And the streak didn't end there.
That same year he lost the role of Superman to Brandon Routh for Superman Returns. Shortly after, Robert Pattinson took away the part of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and later the role of Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga. The specialized press started calling him the unluckiest man in Hollywood.
But his physique and military discipline eventually won out over the casting directors' refusals.
In 2011 he received a call from Zack Snyder. The director was looking for an actor who could embody Clark Kent's brute strength and vulnerability. Cavill won the role of Superman for Man of Steel in 2013 after an extreme training regimen that eliminated every trace of body fat.
His ties to the DC Comics universe lasted nearly ten years. He shot Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 and the troubled Justice League in 2017. During production of the latter, the famous mustache incident happened. Cavill was under contract for Mission: Impossible - Fallout in 2018 and couldn't shave because the script required it.
So Warner had to digitally remove his facial hair, with mediocre results. The cost of this digital touch-up topped $3 million, according to production reports of the time.
But his career didn't stop at capes.
In 2019, he accepted the role of Geralt of Rivia in Netflix's series The Witcher. Cavill was already a devoted fan of the book and video game saga. He insisted on performing all of his own action scenes and spent hours perfecting his sword handling so the shots would look real. He left the series in 2023 after three seasons over disagreements about the direction of the storyline.
Cavill doesn't hide his more technical side. In 2020, a video of him building his own computer piece by piece went viral (a process that took him several hours of meticulous work). This passion for detail led him to seek full control over his future projects to avoid the problems he faced in his earlier big franchises.
In 2024, he worked again with Guy Ritchie on The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. It was a fast shoot in Turkey, where he played a World War II commando. That same year, he also appeared in the spy thriller Argylle under director Matthew Vaughn.
His biggest logistical challenge began in 2022.
He signed a deal with Amazon Studios to develop a cinematic universe based on Warhammer 40,000. On this project, Cavill serves as executive producer with decision-making power over the story's canon. The agreement gives Amazon worldwide rights for film and television after months of legal negotiations with the British company Games Workshop.
The main clause of the contract requires the actor to oversee how faithful the scripts are to the miniatures' original source material.
