Gina Carano didn't break into Hollywood through a conventional casting call. Director Steven Soderbergh discovered her watching a Muay Thai fight on television and decided she should star in his next spy movie. The filmmaker wanted a real physical presence, and Carano fit the mold of a woman who didn't need stunt doubles for risky scenes.
The release of Haywire in 2011 tested her ability to hold the screen opposite actors like Michael Fassbender and Ewan McGregor. Critics praised her natural presence on camera. But what really mattered was her raw power in the fight choreography.
She was not an actress pretending to know how to fight.
Before that debut, she had already appeared in the documentary Ring Girls in 2005 and on the show American Gladiators under the name Crush. Her time in professional mixed martial arts ended with a record of seven wins and one loss. That athletic foundation was her best calling card in an industry used to special effects.
In 2013 she joined the cast of Fast & Furious 6 to face Michelle Rodriguez in one of the franchise's most brutal fights. That supporting role taught her how the machinery of the major studios in Los Angeles worked. Then came Deadpool in 2016, where she played a villain with superhuman strength.
Jon Favreau's call in 2019 to join The Mandalorian changed the course of her career. Her character was a former rebel shock trooper who connected with audiences from the first episode of the Disney+ series. It was her moment of greatest global media exposure.
She shot two seasons of the Star Wars series.
But everything fell apart in February 2021. Disney announced her firing in a public statement after several posts on her social media profiles that the company considered unacceptable. The break was total, and plans for a possible spin-off starring her were immediately canceled.
After leaving the galactic franchise, she teamed up with the conservative platform The Daily Wire to keep working. In 2022, she produced and starred in the western Terror on the Prairie. It was a project shot in Montana under extreme weather conditions and with a small crew.
The traditional industry turned its back on her.
In February 2024, Gina Carano filed a lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm for wrongful termination and discrimination. Elon Musk funded the legal costs of the case through her company X. The lawsuit seeks 75,000 dollars in damages and her forced reinstatement to the series' original cast.
Production of her movie My Son Hunter in 2022 marked another attempt to stay active outside the commercial mainstream. The budget for Terror on the Prairie was estimated at around 750,000 dollars.
