David Dastmalchian was sitting in a police van in 2008. He had a tiny role in The Dark Knight, but his face stuck in the minds of half the world. He had no agent and no money.
He came from the Chicago stage and a brutal battle with heroin addiction. He spent years living in his car and working precarious jobs while trying to act. That physical and mental experience shaped the way he understood the craft.
He wrote the screenplay for Animals in 2014 to explain that personal low point. The film won the Special Jury Prize at South by Southwest. That was the moment the industry realized he was more than a supporting actor with sharp features.
And the phone started ringing with Los Angeles area codes.
Denis Villeneuve recruited him in 2013 for Prisoners. His performance as a suspect obsessed with mazes marked the start of a recurring partnership. In 2017, he worked with the Canadian director again on Blade Runner 2049, where he played a forensic technician.
Dastmalchian often says he prefers characters who live in the shadows. In 2021, he brought Piter De Vries to life in the adaptation of Dune. He accepted the role without reading the script because he blindly trusts the vision of his regular directors.
But his big breakthrough into mainstream audiences came with comic book franchises. In 2015, he entered the Marvel Universe with Ant-Man. He reprised the role of Kurt in the 2018 sequel, bringing comic relief that wasn't originally planned in the drafts.
The risk paid off.
James Gunn gave him the role of Polka-Dot Man in The Suicide Squad in 2021. He made a B-movie villain look like a broken figure. Critics praised his ability to humanize the absurd through absolute restraint in his gestures.
In 2023, he starred in Late Night with the Devil. He plays Jack Delroy, a 1970s talk show host who sells his soul for a single point of ratings on Halloween night. Filming was completed in just twenty days in Melbourne.
It was an absolute box office success.
The film cost nearly two million dollars and multiplied its investment at box offices in the United States and Europe. It is one of the most profitable independent productions of that era. The actor also works as an executive producer on this type of low-budget project.
That same year, Christopher Nolan called him for Oppenheimer. He played William L. Borden in the interrogation scenes. Dastmalchian's contract for the production included strict confidentiality clauses regarding the handling of the historical documents used on set.
