Paul Rudd was spinning records at Bar Mitzvah parties before anyone in Hollywood knew how to spell his name in the credits.
He studied theater at the University of Kansas and then at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. He wasn't chasing instant fame, because he preferred the stage to the red carpet.
In 1995 Clueless hit theaters. He played Josh and suddenly he was the guy everyone wanted around. But teen movies have a shelf life, and Rudd knew it perfectly well.
She wasn't seeking instant fame.
He chose to retreat into independent theater and minor roles that others would have turned down for lacking glamour. That period taught him that his strength wasn't intense drama but reaction comedy.
For years he worked in the raunchy comedy territory of Judd Apatow's factory. In 2004 he filmed Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and a year later he appeared in The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
His style is dry and direct. He doesn't need theatrics to steal a scene from the official leads. That's why he became the go-to choice for any director who needed a human touch on screen.
In 2002 he joined the cast of Friends as Mike Hannigan. That role gave him massive global visibility that big-budget films still denied him.
And the gamble paid off.
He took roles in films like Role Models in 2008 and I Love You, Man in 2009. On those sets he learned that improvisation was his best technical weapon for surviving mediocre scripts.
Marvel's call in 2014 to star in Ant-Man seemed like a casting mistake to industry analysts. A comedic actor at 45 years old didn't fit the mold of the muscular superheroes of the time.
Rudd didn't just act in the 2015 film. He also actively worked on the screenplay alongside Adam McKay to make sure the tone was right.
Audiences connected with his vulnerability.
He repeated the creative process in Ant-Man and the Wasp in 2018 and later in the 2023 sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The franchise's commercial success allowed him to choose much riskier projects outside the traditional studio system.
In 2021 he starred in the series The Shrink Next Door alongside Will Ferrell. It was a shift toward the psychological and the dark that threw some of his usual audience off balance.
In 2024 he returned to the big screen with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, playing Gary Grooberson. The production's shoot in the UK had an estimated budget of 100 million dollars.
