Synopsis of Murderbot

Murderbot is a science fiction series created by Paul and Chris Weitz for Apple TV and starring Alexander Skarsgård. Its protagonist is a security android who goes by that name and has developed self-awareness, which it hides from its superiors. While carrying out dangerous missions, the android protects a team of scientists studying a hostile planet, led by Dr. Ayda Mensah. It just wants to watch its soap operas, but it can't help being drawn to humans and, at the same time, horrified by how fragile they are. Keeping the secret of its freedom becomes its greatest challenge.

Trivia about Murderbot

Martha Wells, the author of the books, confirmed in 2021 that she had read the script and was "genuinely excited" about the TV adaptation.

Filming for season one took place between March and June 2024 in Toronto and parts of Ontario, and the Sanctuary Moon scenes were shot on a virtual production stage.

Casting was delayed by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and in December of that year it was announced that Alexander Skarsgård would produce and star in the series.

Ahead of the premiere, several outlets had already pointed out that the lead character is coded as autistic and agender, a trait many commentators highlighted.

The episode "All Systems Red" won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story at the 2026 Hugo Awards.

The creators have explained that the second season will adapt the next three books in the saga and will feature longer episodes.

Tommy Arnold, the illustrator of the special edition of Murderbot's The Murderbot Diaries, created the series' concept art.

Apple TV+ renewed "Murderbot" for a second season on July 10, 2025, one day before the final episode of the first installment aired.
