DeWanda Wise doesn't accept supporting roles that exist only to make the lead shine.
In 2006, she finished her studies at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York with the determination of someone who knows that talent without strategy goes only so far. Her first years in the profession were a series of auditions for episodic roles in shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent or The Good Wife. But she wanted more than a line of dialogue in a fictional courtroom.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017, Wise took on the weight of playing Nola Darling in the television adaptation of She’s Gotta Have It. Spike Lee trusted her to update an icon of ’80s independent film, and the result was an electric performance that lasted two seasons on Netflix. Wise filmed 19 episodes in which she explored the sexual and creative autonomy of a Black woman in contemporary Brooklyn.
Filming with Lee was a school of physical and mental endurance. Wise learned to manage the pace of a production where she was the absolute center of every shot. So when filming wrapped in 2019, her name was already on the radar of the industry's most important casting directors.
In 2019, she came close to joining the Marvel Universe with Captain Marvel, but had to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts with her series. It was a hard blow that many would have handled with frustration. Wise preferred to focus on films like Someone Great and Fatherhood, where she shared the screen with Kevin Hart in 2021.
Her big commercial break came in 2022 with the release of Jurassic World Dominion. In this production, Wise played Kayla Watts and brought a classic heroine's presence who never needed rescuing. The film grossed over $1,000 million worldwide and placed her among the actresses capable of carrying an action franchise on their shoulders.
Despite the noise of the dinosaurs, Wise kept her feet in more author-driven projects.
In 2023, she appeared in Poolman under the direction of Chris Pine, and a year later made the definitive leap into executive producing. With Imaginary in 2024, she showed that she is interested in controlling the creative process from the ground up, not just waiting for her agent to send her a finished script. For her, film is as much a business of intellectual property as it is of acting.
Wise has lived in California with her husband, actor Alano Miller, since they married in 2009, just three months after they started dating. In 2024, the actress decided her production company would seek out stories that break away from conventional narratives about trauma. Her approach focuses on genre and on building characters who have a natural authority on screen.
The film Imaginary had a production budget of $10 million.
