In 1999, nobody gave a dime for the sequel to Carrie. Emily Bergl took on the role of Rachel Lang under the pressure of succeeding Sissy Spacek and the weight of a production that smelled like a commercial disaster. But her unsettling gaze saved the day for a movie that is now pure 90s cult favorite.
She was born in Milton Keynes but grew up in Chicago. That mix of British composure and American energy let her jump from high school drama to science fiction without missing a beat. In 2002, Steven Spielberg cast her in the miniseries Taken.
That project won the Emmy for Best Miniseries. Bergl played Lisa, a woman haunted by alien abductions for decades. It was her first big paycheck in the industry and the key that opened the doors of the major studios in Los Angeles.
Television adopted her forever.
In 2010, she joined the Wisteria Lane neighborhood. Her character on Desperate Housewives, Beth Young, was a poisoned candy that started as a minor storyline and ended with a tragic finale that left audiences stunned. As a result, casting directors took note of her for roles of women who hide something beneath a surface of normalcy.
She joined the cast of Shameless in 2014. She played Sammi Slott for two seasons of total chaos. She was paid for 21 episodes in which her character blew up the Gallagher family dynamic with a rawness few actors can handle. But she came from theater and knew how to handle the noise.
Because Bergl never left the stage. In New York she became a familiar face on the cabaret circuit, performing at venues like the Algonquin Hotel. There she sings and acts for audiences who sometimes don't even recognize her as the television actress.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017, she got her start on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. For five seasons, she brought Tessie, Susie Myerson's sister, to life. The shoot demanded millimeter-precise dialogue delivery because of the series' frantic pace. Bergl never missed a single take of her comedic scenes in the seedy underbelly of New York.
Sometimes mainstream movies come knocking when you least expect it. In 2024, she appeared in the film Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. She played the mother of the family that sets the plot in motion in New York. It was a brief role filmed at Leavesden Studios in the United Kingdom.
Her career doesn't depend on magazine covers or red carpet premieres. In 2023, she returned to Broadway in the play Good Night, Oscar alongside Sean Hayes. There she proved she prefers the sweat of the stage to the comfort of Hollywood dressing rooms.
That was only the beginning of another chapter.
She prefers living in New York and staying away from the noise of the California hills. In 2024, her schedule focused on independent projects and keeping her variety show active. The production of The Rage: Carrie 2 cost 21 million dollars and barely recouped its investment during its original U.S. release.
