The audition that went well because it went badly

Liza Weil didn't land the role of Rory Gilmore. Amy Sherman-Palladino wrote the character of Paris Geller specifically for her after seeing her failed audition in 2000. That decision permanently changed the course of her career.

The actress grew up in a traveling theater company called The Madhouse Company of London. Her parents were actors, and she spent her childhood traveling across Europe before settling in Pennsylvania.

The set was her natural habitat.

On the set of Gilmore Girls, she proved she could handle three-page monologues without barely taking a breath. Her portrayal of Paris Geller lasted seven seasons, and she returned for the series' revival in 2016.

But her range was not confined to the fast-paced comedy of the early 2000s.

The Shondaland Shield

In 2014 producer Shonda Rhimes gave her the role of Bonnie Winterbottom in How to Get Away with Murder. It was a complete change of register, where vulnerability blended with the coldness of a tormented lawyer.

She stayed with that production until 2020. She earned excellent reviews for her ability to carry the dramatic weight alongside figures of the caliber of Viola Davis.

And he did it without making a media splash.

After the show ended, she sought projects that allowed her to explore supporting characters with a lot of psychological depth. She never chased top billing, but her performances always brought a technical solidity that casting directors valued above fame.

A career in the shadows

In 2019 she joined the cast of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, playing Carole Keen. It was a reunion with the rapid-fire dialogue style that made her known two decades earlier.

Despite her success on television, she never abandoned independent film. In 2014, she starred in SMILEY and appeared in short films that barely received commercial distribution outside the festival circuit.

In 2024, she played FBI agent Katherine Russo in the third season of The Cleaning Lady.

The contract for this Fox production included twelve episodes filmed entirely on location in New Mexico.
