Molly Price is not a red carpet face. She's one of those actresses who smell of asphalt and New York reality.
Born in North Plainfield, New Jersey, in 1966. She trained at Rutgers University and soon understood that her place was with characters who have to fight to make it to the end of the month. Her look, far from Hollywood's porcelain standards, gave her access to roles with a much rawer human texture.
She made her Broadway debut in 1993 in the play The Grapes of Wrath.
And that's where it all began.
That first brush with the stage shaped her approach to acting. In theater, there are no editing tricks, and Price learned to hold her gaze without blinking. But it was television that gave her a steady paycheck and recognition from the general public.
In 1999, she landed the role of Faith Yokas in the series Third Watch. She played a New York City police officer over six seasons and 131 episodes. She was no idealized cop: she had marriage troubles, difficult children, and an exhaustion that came right through the screen.
During the filming of this series, something happened that few people know about. Her real-life husband, Derek Kelly, is a New York firefighter and also appeared in the show playing a firefighter. This real-life connection gave her performance a truthfulness that bordered on documentary.
Price was on the set of Third Watch until the series ended in 2005.
But she didn't want to stay trapped in crime dramas forever.
She looked for small projects where the script mattered more than the budget. In 2001, she took part in The Howling, and later in Chasing Sleep. She never cared about how big her name was on the poster as long as the character had something to hide beneath the surface.
The industry tends to penalize women once they hit forty. Price dodged that bullet by specializing in being the supporting actress who saves a mediocre scene.
In 2014, she worked under Steven Soderbergh on the series The Knick. There she played Effie Barrow and proved she could handle period drama as naturally as police drama. Her face fit perfectly with the gritty, surgical aesthetic of the early twentieth century.
And the gamble paid off.
She continued working in film with directors such as S. Craig Zahler. In 2017, she appeared in Brawl in Cell Block 99 (a raw, brutally direct movie). Price played Gil, and her presence provided the much-needed pause amid all that testosterone and broken bones.
That same year, she appeared in the series Feud and in The Path. She wasn't after absolute stardom, because she knew that the power of a character actor lies in their ability to disappear into the larger story.
In 2024, she filmed her role in the series The Good Doctor as Charlie's mother. Her scenes were shot at studios in Vancouver under the direction of Rebecca Moline. Price ended the year with a resume of more than sixty credits in top-tier productions.
