Synopsis of Third Watch

New York City is the setting of this drama series created by John Wells and Edward Allen Bernero and aired on NBC. It follows the day-to-day lives of a group of police officers, firefighters and paramedics who share the 55th precinct and the 57th firehouse. They all work the shift from 15:00 to 23:00, the so-called "third watch" that gives the series its title. During those hours, they respond to fires, crimes and accidents, one after another. Between calls, each of them also deals with personal problems. The episodes combine self-contained stories with ongoing storylines that sometimes stretch across several seasons.

Trivia about Third Watch

The series was originally going to focus only on police officers and paramedics. Firefighter Jimmy Doherty was added after Eddie Cibrian auditioned for the role of Bosco.

The series won a Peabody Award for the episode "In Their Own Words" from season 3, in which several actors interviewed real NYPD and FDNY members.

Both the firehouse and the precinct are located between King Blvd and Arthur St., which is why both buildings are called "Camelot."

Molly Price was pregnant during season five, and in her few appearances, her baby bump was hidden under blankets while she lay in bed.

Nia Long won several NAACP Image Awards for her performance as Sasha Monroe, the character she played on the series.

Edward Allen Bernero brought his experience as a former police officer to the series and, in addition to co-creating it, served as producer, writer and director; he wrote 37 episodes over its six seasons.

NBC canceled the series in March 2005 after six seasons, and it finished airing that same year; the decision came while the network was preparing new projects to shoot in New York City.

The production brought in several professionals from "ER," including John Wells and part of the production team, ahead of the premiere of "Third Watch."
