Eva LaRue was born in Long Beach under the California sun, but her family tree stretches across France, Scotland and Puerto Rico. That genetic mix gave her a look Hollywood took years to categorize during the 1980s. She started out as a teen model before realizing her place was in front of the cameras in scripted television.
In 1993, she signed her first major contract to play Maria Santos on the series All My Children. What seemed like a routine job on a daytime soap opera ended up being the centerpiece of her career for decades. There she met John Callahan, and the chemistry between them spilled off the screen and into marriage.
And the gamble paid off.
American audiences became obsessed with her character because it broke with the Latina stereotypes of the era. Maria Santos was a woman with a medical career and a complicated personal life who avoided the usual clichés. During that period, the actress received several Emmy Award nominations for her ability to carry storylines of intense emotional drama.
But the exhaustion of daily shoots in New York pushed her to look for new horizons in Los Angeles. After a brief stint in smaller productions, she decided it was time to leave the security of soap operas and try her luck in prime time.
In 2005, she joined the cast of CSI: Miami to play Natalia Boa Vista. Her entry into the series was not easy, since her character began as a lab technician with a troubled past involving domestic violence. The writers intended for her role to be a supporting one and nearly invisible.
She stayed for seven seasons.
LaRue brought a much-needed sense of restraint to a team led by David Caruso's over-the-top performances. During her time on the series, she appeared in a total of 153 episodes and became one of the most recognizable faces of the franchise internationally. The show was a massive hit in Spain, and her face began appearing on the covers of TV magazines.
Because the pace of filming outdoors under the California heat, pretending to be Florida, was exhausting. Work days exceeded fourteen hours a day, and the technical demands of the scientific dialogue required a prodigious memory. So the actress used that period to diversify her investments outside the entertainment industry.
After the police drama was canceled in 2012, the industry entered a phase of digital transformation that affected actors of her generation. LaRue didn't let the lack of leading roles in mainstream film discourage her. In 2016, she appeared in the Netflix series Fuller House, playing Teri Tanner in a move that tapped into TV nostalgia.
Won the Daytime Emmy in 2020.
This recognition came for her role as Celeste Rosales on The Young and the Restless and served to remind critics that her talent was still intact. It was a technical victory that rewarded her ability to step into a show already in progress and raise the level of scenes shared with younger actors. In 2024, she joined the cast of General Hospital to play Natalia Ramirez.
Filming of her scenes at Hollywood studios is usually concentrated in production blocks that use three simultaneous cameras with little to no rehearsal. Each episode costs roughly $250,000 to produce and airs about three weeks after it was originally filmed.
