Brett Cullen isn't the kind of actor who stops traffic on Hollywood Boulevard. But his face is lodged in the subconscious of anyone who has turned on a TV in the last forty years. He was born in Houston in 1956 and learned the craft at the University of Houston under Cecil Pickett. There he forged a friendship with Dennis Quaid that would shape his first steps in the industry.
His arrival in Los Angeles was no walk in the park. He took whatever work he could find until, in 1983, he landed the role of Bob Cleary in the miniseries The Thorn Birds. That gave him a national profile he hadn't expected.
And the phone started ringing.
During the 1980s, Cullen specialized in trusted men and characters with somewhat ambiguous moral integrity. In 1995, he appeared in Apollo 13, playing one of the mission control engineers. It was a technical and demanding shoot where precision mattered more than personal showmanship, because director Ron Howard was after an almost documentary-like realism.
In 2000, he played quarterback Eddie Martel in The Replacements. He had to train with professionals for weeks so his throws would look convincing on screen. Still, his real specialty has always been playing authority figures who hide inner cracks.
Industry insiders have pegged him as the reliable go-to supporting actor.
In 2012, Christopher Nolan cast him in The Dark Knight Rises as a congressman. Seven years later, in 2019, Todd Phillips gave him the role of Thomas Wayne in Joker. The film grossed more than 1,000 million dollars and placed him at the center of high-budget commercial auteur cinema.
Cullen accepted the role of Batman's father knowing his take on Thomas Wayne would be far less heroic than previous versions. It was a deliberate choice to move away from the usual tropes of the superhero genre.
In 2021, he appeared in The Blacklist, playing a character key to the show's overarching mythology. His work pace didn't let up during that stretch. For a character actor, time off often means being forgotten.
In 2022, he joined the cast of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty to play Bill Sharman. Filming for the second season wrapped in 2023 after several months of intensive production on location in California. HBO decided to cancel the series for good shortly after airing the final episode of that season.
