Synopsis of The Haunting of Hill House

In the summer of 1992, Hugh and Olivia Crain arrive at Hill House with their five children, a mansion they plan to renovate, sell, and then use to build their own house, designed by Olivia. However, unexpected repairs force the family to extend their stay, and soon they begin to notice supernatural events that grow stronger. Twenty-six years later, Steven, Shirley, Theodora, Luke, and Eleanor are adults who are still haunted by what they lived through there. The series alternates between two timelines: the past in the house and the present, where the siblings continue to be tormented by those experiences. Created and directed by Mike Flanagan for Netflix, the series stars Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, and Victoria Pedretti as the adult versions of the siblings, alongside Carla Gugino and Henry Thomas as the parents.

Trivia about The Haunting of Hill House

In April 2017, Netflix ordered a ten-episode adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel, with Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy as executive producers. It was the first scripted series Amblin made for the platform.

Filming began in October 2017 in Atlanta, Georgia. The exterior of the mansion was a LaGrange property that was previously called Bisham Manor.

The soundtrack, composed by The Newton Brothers, was released as a double LP by Waxwork Records on October 31, 2018, the same day as Halloween.

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, in an interview with The Jerusalem Post, said this series was his favorite Netflix show, with no competition.

Horror author Stephen King, a fan of Jackson's novel, tweeted about the series, saying it was close to a work of genius and that he believed Jackson would have approved of it.

The sixth episode was designed to look like a single continuous shot: the crew built a hallway between two sets, rehearsed for five weeks with stunt doubles, and finally filmed five long takes, one per day.

The series won Best TV Series at the 2019 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards and has racked up nine wins and 36 nominations, according to the IMDb record.

Netflix then produced "The Haunting of Bly Manor," released in 2020 as an anthology follow-up by Mike Flanagan, with some of the same crew and cast members as "The Haunting of Hill House," but with a different story and characters.
