Synopsis of True Detective

On the coastal plains of southern Louisiana, two State Police detectives, Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, investigate the murder of a young woman in 1995. The victim was subjected to a pagan ritual. The HBO series, created by Nic Pizzolatto, moves between several timelines. In 2012, other police officers question them because they suspect the killer has returned. Meanwhile, the pair revisit the hunt for a serial killer with hidden ties that lasted seventeen years.

Trivia about True Detective

McConaughey was going to play Marty Hart, but he convinced Pizzolatto to give him the role of Cohle. Harrelson ended up with the role of Hart at McConaughey's own request.

Filming for the first season lasted 100 consecutive days, and each episode was shot on 35 mm film.

The first season was HBO's most-watched series in its first year on air, with an average gross audience of 11.9 million viewers.

The series won the Writers Guild of America awards for Best Dramatic Series and Best New Series.

The first season's opening credits use "Far from Any Road," an alternative country song by The Handsome Family included on their 2003 album Singing Bones.

The second season's opening credits use "Nevermind" by Leonard Cohen, and its lyrics change in each episode with different verses from the song.

HBO renewed "True Detective" for a fifth season with Issa López as showrunner, writer, director and executive producer, after signing a multi-year global deal with the network and Max.

The fifth season will star Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas, is set in Jamaica Bay, New York, and is scheduled to begin production in 2027, although it does not yet have a premiere date.
