Quentin Tarantino doesn't give second chances to just anyone. Dana Gourrier caught his attention during the casting process for Django Unchained in 2012, and ended up playing Cora. But what seemed like just another supporting role in a big-budget production became the start of an unusual creative partnership.
And the gamble paid off.
Before working with Hollywood's biggest names, she studied at the California Institute of the Arts, where she earned a master's degree in Fine Arts that shaped her ability to build characters on a rigorous technical foundation. For Gourrier, acting was never a matter of luck but of pure method and constant study of the scripts.
Born in New Orleans, a city that shapes her rhythm and her understanding of Southern drama. In 2011, she appeared in the series Treme, and used the shoot in her hometown to show she knew the codes of the South better than anyone. Her move to larger projects was a natural result of her earlier work in local theater.
In 2015, she returned to Tarantino's world with The Hateful Eight. Playing Minnie Mink required an imposing physical presence capable of holding its own against Samuel L. Jackson in a confined space. They shot in extreme cold in the Colorado mountains, and she kept her cool without complaint during the long waits between takes.
She is not an extreme method actress.
She prefers the precision of the written word. On the small screen, she has moved from genre to genre without breaking a sweat. She appeared in American Horror Story during 2013 and later in the first season of True Detective in 2014. These are brief roles, but charged with an electric intensity that stays with viewers long after the credits roll.
In 2017, she joined the cast of the Netflix series GLOW. There she explored a different side, where dry humor and the physicality of training were essential. But she always returns to dense drama. In 2021, she worked under Lee Daniels in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, bringing gravity to a story heavy with pain and politics.
She landed the role of Chicot in the series Interview with the Vampire during 2024.
This project for the cable network AMC marked a return to her Louisiana gothic roots. But she didn't slow down on other fronts. In 2023, she joined the cast of The Burial alongside Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones. It's a courtroom drama in which she plays a secretary whose calm anchors the entire narrative of the main trial during its most chaotic moments.
Her classical training lets her move between prestige television and independent productions without losing her essence. In 2022, she worked on the series Mayfair Witches, adding to her credits in adaptations of Anne Rice's work. Her name keeps coming up in major productions that choose New Orleans as their logistics hub.
Production contracts for her television work typically stipulate twelve-hour shooting days, with a three-week pre-production period for table reads.
