Two years before the Civil War breaks out (1861-1865), Schultz, a German bounty hunter tracking a group of killers, promises the slave Django his freedom if he helps him catch them. Once the job is done successfully, Django chooses to stay by the German's side and help him capture the South's most wanted criminals. He becomes an expert bounty hunter, but his only goal is to rescue his wife, Broomhilda, whom he lost to the slave trade. The search leads Django and Schultz to Calvin Candie, the villainous owner of the "Candyland" plantation. Their presence around the property arouses the suspicions of Stephen, Candie's trusted slave.
