Marsha Stephanie Blake was born in Jamaica and moved to the United States with a determination that didn't fit a standard résumé. She studied at Dartmouth and trained at the University of California, San Diego. Her academic background is among the most solid of her generation.
But prestige doesn't always pay the bills.
For more than a decade, her face was a regular presence in one-off episodes of crime series. She appeared in Law & Order and Third Watch between 2002 and 2005. They were small roles with few lines, which she delivered with surgical precision.
In 2015, she joined the cast of Orange Is the New Black to play Berdie Rogers. It was a restrained performance that offered a counterpoint to the aggression of the prison setting. And it worked because Blake projects a natural authority without ever having to raise her voice.
In 2019, When They See Us arrived and everything changed for how the public viewed her craft. Her portrayal of Linda McCray in Ava DuVernay's miniseries avoided any trace of cheap melodrama. Her Emmy nomination in 2019 for Best Supporting Actress was the logical result of work built on observation.
The industry took a while to see what the theater already knew.
Before this TV breakthrough, she had already graced the Broadway stage in The Merchant of Venice in 2010. She shared the stage with Al Pacino. That stage experience gave her a physical control she brings to every close-up. Because Blake knows that in film, less is often more.
In 2022, she appeared in the series The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey alongside Samuel L. Jackson. That same year, she starred in the Canadian film Brother. The film won 12 awards at the Canadian Screen Awards and confirmed that her name was synonymous with quality in independent projects.
In 2023, she worked under the direction of Ethan Hawke on Wildcat. The film explores the life of writer Flannery O'Connor. Blake plays a character who constantly moves between reality and literary fiction.
And her commitment to sobriety kept paying off.
In 2024, she joined the cast of The Piano Lesson for Netflix. The film is an adaptation of August Wilson's play, produced by Denzel Washington. Principal photography in Atlanta wrapped after exactly 38 days of shooting on closed sets.
