In 1878, fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross travels to Fort Smith, Arkansas, to collect the body of her father, who was murdered by Tom Chaney, one of his farmhands. Mattie wants justice and asks the local sheriff about the killer. He tells her that Chaney has fled with the gang of "Lucky" Ned Pepper into Indian Territory, where the sheriff has no authority. Mattie refuses to give up and learns how to hire a federal marshal who can pursue the criminal across the border. The film is directed by Joel and Ethan Coen and stars Hailee Steinfeld as the determined young heroine, alongside Jeff Bridges.
