Matt Damon sold the script for Good Will Hunting for 600,000 dollars when his bank account was practically empty. He was 27 years old and sharing a rundown apartment with Ben Affleck in Los Angeles. The industry wanted the script but not the actors. They held firm, though, and insisted on starring in the film or there would be no deal.
Miramax agreed to the terms in 1997. That decision changed the trajectory of a young man who had left Harvard just a few credits short of finishing his English Literature degree. Before that, he had only picked up supporting roles in films such as Mystic Pizza or Geronimo.
The film grossed $225 million and won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
Damon didn't pursue the traditional leading-man path after his success. He chose to work with Steven Spielberg in Saving Private Ryan in 1998 and with Anthony Minghella in The Talented Mr. Ripley a year later. For the latter, he had to lose thirteen pounds to play a vulnerable psychopath who murders out of class envy.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2002 the Universal studio didn't believe Damon could be an action hero. The shooting of The Bourne Identity was total chaos, with constant script changes and fights between director Doug Liman and the producers. Damon trained in boxing and weapons handling for six months to make the amnesiac who kills with a pen believable.
The franchise grossed over 1,600 million dollars across five films. But the real change was in visual style. The dry, realistic approach of his Jason Bourne forced the James Bond series to completely reinvent itself with Daniel Craig.
Not everything was a commercial success during that period. In 2003 he starred in Stuck on You, a comedy about conjoined brothers that barely recouped its costs. But Damon has always preferred the risk of working with directors like Steven Soderbergh, with whom he made the Ocean's Eleven trilogy and the satire The Informant! in 2009.
For that role, he gained fifteen pounds on a diet of pizza and hamburgers.
Christopher Nolan called him in 2014 for a secret role in Interstellar. Damon played Dr. Mann, an astronaut who embodies human cowardice in the face of the vastness of space. It was a brief but key appearance for the film's third act.
Ridley Scott put him alone in front of the camera in 2015 with The Martian. The budget was 108 million dollars, and worldwide box office topped 630 million. Much of the footage consisted of Damon talking to a webcam while growing potatoes in a red desert.
In 2021 he co-founded the production company Artists Equity with Ben Affleck. The goal was for movie profits to be shared more fairly among the technical and creative crew. Its first project under this model was Air in 2023, in which he played the Nike executive who convinced Michael Jordan's family.
That same year, he appeared in Oppenheimer under Nolan's direction for the second time. He played General Leslie Groves, the military head of the Manhattan Project. Damon accepted the role even though he had promised his wife he would take a sabbatical year to attend couples therapy.
In 2024 he starred in The Instigators for a streaming platform alongside Casey Affleck. The production had an estimated budget of 85 million dollars.
Damon follows a work routine that prioritizes shoots lasting no more than four months so he can stay close to his family. His standard contract includes private transportation and accommodations for his inner circle during filming weeks.
