Julia Roberts was not the first choice for Pretty Woman. Disney wanted Meg Ryan, and the original script ended with the lead character being thrown from a car in a dark alley. That 1990 film changed the career of an actress who until then was only the sister of Eric Roberts.
It worked because she was different.
Before that red dress came Mystic Pizza in 1988. Even then, it was clear her laugh would be a more powerful working tool than any classic acting method. In 1989, she earned her first Oscar nomination for Steel Magnolias, but the world still didn't know it was looking at the future box office queen.
In the nineties, her name was enough to finance any project. But Roberts didn't want to be just America's sweetheart. In 2000, she took the role of Erin Brockovich and demanded a salary of 20 million dollars. She was the first woman to earn that amount.
She won the Oscar and proved that her charisma could carry a dense social drama. And she did it without giving up her production company, Red Om Films. Because Julia Roberts has always understood filmmaking as a business where she makes the rules.
Nobody in Hollywood has that jawline.
Her romantic comedy era defined a whole generation of moviegoing. Titles like Notting Hill in 1999 or My Best Friend’s Wedding in 1997 generated box office returns that seem almost impossible today for stories without special effects. The industry has changed, but she has kept her status as a box office guarantee for three decades.
In 2022, she returned to the genre that made her famous with Ticket to Paradise alongside George Clooney. The film grossed 170 million dollars worldwide. Projects like this show that audiences still want star power they can see on screen, in a landscape dominated by superhero franchises.
Magnetism can't be manufactured in a lab.
In 2023, she starred in Leave the World Behind for Netflix. She stepped away from her usual glamour to play a cynical mother in an apocalyptic setting (a role that required an unusual level of restraint for her). The film was produced by the company of Barack and Michelle Obama.
Julia Roberts has starred in more than 50 feature films since she entered the industry. In 2024, her net worth was estimated at around $250 million.
