George Clooney spent almost a decade going from one failed pilot to another and second-rate series before finding massive success. In 1994, the series ER gave him the charismatic pediatrician role he needed to break into movies for good.

And then came the suit with nipples.

The failure of Batman & Robin in 1997 could have ended his professional career. The production cost 160 million dollars, but the reviews were so brutal that Clooney decided to change the way he chose scripts for the rest of his life.

The Pact with Auteur Cinema

His redemption came with Out of Sight under the direction of Steven Soderbergh. It was the turning point when the industry realized he was not just a television actor trying to make action movies.

His career cannot be explained without the creation of the production company Section Eight in 2000. That move allowed him to finance films that major studios rejected at the time for being too political or not commercial enough.

In 2006, he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Syriana after gaining more than twenty pounds and suffering a serious back injury. The physical sacrifice was the price of his credibility with Hollywood's academy voters.

The Director's Chair and the Tequila Business

His directorial debut with Confessions of a Dangerous Mind in 2002 showed a dry visual style far removed from traditional spotlight-driven filmmaking. Clooney has always preferred the black-and-white look of Good Night, and Good Luck to the fireworks of blockbusters.

But his most profitable move happened outside the film sets. In 2017, he sold his tequila brand Casamigos for close to 1,000 million dollars.

Money buys silence and time.

He directed Midnight Sky in 2020 for Netflix, and in 2023 he released The Boys in the Boat. For this last film, he chose to stay exclusively behind the camera to tell the story of the American rowing team at the 1936 Olympic Games.

In 2024, he reunited on screen with Brad Pitt in Wolfs, directed by Jon Watts. The distribution deal included a technical theatrical release before its full arrival on Apple TV+.

The industry is no longer the same.

In 2025, he is set to premiere a feature film directed by Noah Baumbach, in which he co-stars with Adam Sandler. The production was shot on location in Italy and New York during the spring months of 2024.

The final contract for Wolfs set Clooney's salary at 35 million dollars.
