Michael Clayton is a fixer at a New York law firm, a man the firm turns to when a client gets into trouble and the problem has to be made to disappear quietly. He used to be a prosecutor. Today he is dealing with a divorce, shaky finances, and a career that no longer fulfills him. One night he meets an important client in Westchester County and, on his way home, pulls over when he spots three horses on top of a hill. Shortly afterward, the firm asks him to step in on a sensitive matter: a class-action lawsuit against a company whose products could endanger the health of those who use them. Michael finds himself caught up in the case without having sought it out, and his job, making messes that nobody wants to see in court disappear, starts to weigh on him.
