Find the truth.

Washington, D.C. Cal McCaffrey is a journalist with a nose for uncomfortable stories, working at The Washington Globe. His long friendship with Stephen Collins, a congressman on a promising career path, puts him in a delicate position when the politician's aide is killed by a subway train. The newsroom assigns him to cover the case, and Cal must decide how to report on a tragedy involving someone he has known for years. He wants the story, but he also wants to protect his friend, and that dilemma marks his first steps in the investigation.

Trivia about State of Play

Brad Pitt committed to the role in August 2007, but left the production a week before filming was scheduled to begin in November 2007.

During filming in Washington, Russell Crowe trained in journalism with Metro section editor of The Washington Post, R. B. Brenner.

In a scene filmed at the Library of Congress, the extras included real journalists such as Bob Woodward, Margaret Carlson, and Bob Schieffer.

The scene of the train accident was filmed at Rosslyn station in Virginia, because it was the only Washington Metro station with a long escalator leading down to a platform.

The producers calculated that the shoot may have broken the record for the largest studio production in the city, with more than a third of the film shot in Washington, D.C.

To prepare for his role, Ben Affleck drew on the experiences of Gary Condit, Eliot Spitzer, and John Edwards, as he explained in an April 2009 interview.

The Independent called the replacement of John Simm with a top-tier American actor "the latest example of the trend for British actors to be replaced by Americans."

The film grossed 87,812,371 dollars worldwide against an estimated budget of 60 million, and won two awards and received four nominations.
