The Name of a Pharaoh in San Francisco

Barry Henley wasn't born Shabaka. He adopted that name, borrowed from an Egyptian pharaoh of the 25th dynasty, much later to assert his identity before taking the stages of San Francisco. His training came not from elite schools but from community theater and a kind of patience that seems almost extinct in the industry today.

The name came to him from a pharaoh.

He made his film debut past the age of thirty with a tiny role in Ninotchka in 1988. It wasn't an explosive start, but it taught him that his quiet demeanor and deep voice were valuable assets to casting directors. In 1993, he took part in What's Love Got to Do with It, and that's where he began building a presence in mid-budget productions.

Henley has always preferred the precision of the supporting role to the wear and tear of the lead. In 1995 he crossed paths with Michael Mann on the set of Heat, and that working relationship changed his career forever. The director found in him an actor capable of holding the frame without blinking alongside the stars of the moment.

Michael Mann's Right-Hand Man

His collaboration with Mann peaked in 2004 with Collateral. Henley played Daniel, the owner of a jazz club who shares a tense, melancholy conversation with the killer played by Tom Cruise. That scene, barely ten minutes long, was shot over several nights to capture the exact light of Los Angeles.

And the gamble paid off.

Before that milestone, he had already worked on Ali in 2001, playing Herbert Muhammad. Henley prepared for the role by studying original recordings and losing weight to fit the aesthetic of the 1970s. But his ability to move between genres became clear when, in 2004, he also joined The Terminal under the direction of Steven Spielberg.

On Spielberg's set, he learned that comedy demands absolute technical precision. He played a customs officer who mixed bureaucracy with a dry but evident humanity. He made a functional character feel memorable without needing big monologues.

Many actors of his generation disappeared with the arrival of digital cinema. Henley did the opposite and turned to quality television to keep his work pace going.

The Security of a Luxury Supporting Role

In 2017, he joined the Marvel universe through the series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., playing Dr. Marcus Benson. It was a five-episode arc that brought the scientific gravity needed for a complex science fiction plot. But general audiences rediscovered him in 2019 thanks to the sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola.

In this series he played Uncle Tunde for five consecutive seasons. The show ended its run in May 2024 after becoming one of the pillars of CBS's lineup. Henley drew on his theater experience to handle comedic timing in front of a live audience.

Despite his success on television, he never abandoned auteur cinema. In 2018 he took part in A Star Is Born, playing Little Ernie alongside Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. His presence added a touch of realism to a story full of melodrama and stadium-sized music.

He's an actor who doesn't need to be the top-billed name.

In 2023, he starred in the independent thriller The Man in the White Van, directed by Warren Skeels. The film is set in the 1970s, and Henley plays a local sheriff who must deal with a series of disappearances in a rural setting. Filming took place mainly on locations in Florida with a small crew.

The production of this film was completed on a budget of less than ten million dollars. Henley signed his participation contract through his Los Angeles talent agency at the end of 2022.
