Jose Pablo Cantillo is not the kind of actor who sought the spotlight from childhood. Born in Wisconsin in 1979, he grew up in Indiana, far from the film industry, where success was measured in other terms. Before stepping onto a stage, he studied Marketing at Indiana University. That business education seemed to be his final destination, but theater crossed his path unexpectedly.
He moved to New York to train at the Atlantic Theater Company and the Herbert Berghof Studio. It was in these classrooms that he honed a dry style and a physical presence that soon caught the attention of casting directors. His intense gaze and his ability to convey tension without big speeches marked his first steps in the industry.
And the gamble on risk paid off.
In 2006, he played Ricky Verona in Crank. It was a risky choice because the character demanded an almost manic level of energy to match Jason Statham. The film became a cult title among action fans and gave Cantillo a privileged place in genre cinema. That role allowed him to avoid filler auditions for generic Latino characters.
His breakthrough into prestige television came with The Shield in 2007, where he played Detective Pepe Damian. The shoot was frantic and demanded an almost documentary-like naturalness. Cantillo proved he could keep up with the pace of one of the most demanding series of the decade. But it was in 2012 that his face became recognizable worldwide thanks to The Walking Dead.
He played Cesar Martinez, the Governor's right-hand man, during seasons three and four. Filming in the Georgia woods was grueling due to the heat and the physical demands of the fight choreography. His character brought a nuance of loyalty and moral doubt that fans of the series appreciated.
Television became his natural habitat.
In 2013, he joined the cast of Sons of Anarchy as Hector Salazar. Cantillo has the ability to step into tightly knit casts without clashing with the tone of the show. He isn't chasing sole leading status, but his characters often drive the most brutal conflicts in the secondary storylines.
In 2021, he worked on the comedy The Valet, and in 2023 he joined the cast of The Last Stop in Yuma County. This last film is a low-budget thriller that gained traction at international festivals for the precision of its script. In 2024, he took part in Ordinary Angels, a project that moved him away from the tough-guy roles that defined his first two decades of work.
Directing is his logical next step.
He wrote and directed the short film The Deconstruction of Jose Cerrato because he felt the need to control the storytelling from behind the camera. Cantillo lives in California and prioritizes projects where the script carries more weight than special effects. In 2023, he appeared in an episode of The Mandalorian, playing an official from the amnesty office.
The actor closed out 2024 with post-production on two independent projects financed outside the major studio system. His per-episode pay on standard cable productions remains in the mid-range of the American industry. He has a current representation contract with the Gersh agency in Beverly Hills.
