Clea DuVall never had to raise her voice for the camera to notice her. In 1998, Robert Rodriguez put her at the center of The Faculty, and her constant look of suspicion worked better than any special effect of the era. That girl from Los Angeles didn't fit the mold of the California blonde that Hollywood was churning out by the ton.
And that was her ticket in.
During the late nineties, her name appeared in nearly every cast with cult aspirations. In 1999, she shot Girl, Interrupted alongside Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. While others chased the spotlight, she specialized in characters who seemed to hide a heavy secret in their pockets.
But the studio system at the end of the century didn't quite know where to place an actress who rejected artificial femininity. DuVall took supporting roles in major productions such as Ghosts of Mars in 2001 and Identity in 2003. They were paying jobs that let her see up close how the machinery worked from the inside.
The industry tried to typecast her, but she preferred independent film with real substance. In 1999, she starred in But I'm a Cheerleader. It was a small project that ended up becoming a landmark for queer cinema. That satire about conversion therapy allowed her to explore a dry comedic style that no one had asked of her until then.
Because DuVall has always preferred the craftsmanship of the work to the glitter of the red carpet.
In 2003 she joined the cast of Carnivàle for HBO. The series ran for two seasons and was canceled due to its high production costs. But there DuVall learned to carry dense, dark storylines on television, which still didn't quite know what to do with such complex stories.
She spent years jumping from one series to another as a character actress. In 2012, she appeared in Argo with Ben Affleck, where she played one of the diplomats sheltered in Iran. The cast won the Screen Actors Guild Award, and the film went on to take home the Oscar. It was a reminder that her presence brought a necessary sense of realism to any historical drama.
After decades of logging hours on set, she decided she no longer wanted to wait for the phone to ring with the next supporting role. In 2016, she wrote and directed The Intervention. She won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance for her screenplay. It wasn't an easy road: she had to finance part of the project with private capital and shoot in just 18 days in a single location.
So her leap into the mainstream came through the back door.
In 2020, she directed Happiest Season for Hulu. It was the first major studio holiday romantic comedy centered on a lesbian couple. The audience success shattered glass ceilings for the streaming service during its premiere week. The film was sold to Sony Pictures for international distribution and sparked a much-needed debate about representation in commercial genres.
In 2022, she adapted Tegan and Sara's memoirs into the series High School, where she served as executive producer and directed several key episodes. Filming took place in Calgary in extreme temperatures that made digital equipment difficult to use. DuVall personally supervised the casting of the twin leads after reviewing hundreds of candidates found on social media. The first season's final budget stayed within cable television standards without any major technical flourishes.
