Robin Wright didn't start out in arthouse cinema or under the spotlight of Hollywood's major awards ceremonies.
Her first serious contract was for the daily soap opera Santa Barbara in 1984. There she filmed more than 500 episodes before turning twenty and learned the craft through grueling shooting days that gave her iron discipline.
Nobody expected her to be there.
In 1987, The Princess Bride was released. The role of Buttercup brought her instant worldwide fame but also typecast her as a fragile image that would take decades to shake off. She was the pretty damsel in distress, and the industry didn't seem to want to see anything else in her.
In 1994, she played Jenny in Forrest Gump. It was the role that put her on every casting director's map, but she chose a different path from the conventional stars of the era.
During her marriage to Sean Penn, she turned down major projects such as Jurassic Park and Batman Forever. She preferred to stay at her home in Northern California raising her children, away from the pressure of the studios in Los Angeles. That decision cost her dearly professionally, because Hollywood quickly forgets those who don't stay in the spotlight.
And she made it.
The premiere of House of Cards in 2013 completely transformed her career. Wright played Claire Underwood for six seasons, and her work was so powerful that she went on to direct several episodes of the series and eventually became an executive producer.
In 2016, she demanded to be paid the same as her male co-star. She discovered an unfair pay gap and threatened to make the situation public if the studio did not immediately match the figures.
She won the battle.
That experience behind the camera opened the door to more personal projects. Wright no longer wanted to be just the face in front of the camera (a role she had already perfected in big-budget films such as Wonder Woman in 2017 or Blade Runner 2049).
She sought absolute control over the storytelling.
In 2021, she made her feature directorial debut with Land. She also starred in the film as a woman who withdraws to the mountains of Canada after suffering a devastating personal tragedy.
The shoot was tough because they had to face real snowstorms and wild animals on set. Critics praised her ability to carry an almost dialogue-free film using only the power of her performance and the images.
In 2024, she reunited with the crew of Forrest Gump to shoot Here. Director Robert Zemeckis used digital tools to de-age her face in a story that unfolds in a single room over a hundred years.
The production of that film cost 50 million dollars.
