Cary Elwes was born in London in 1962, surrounded by canvases and paintbrushes. His father was portrait painter Dominick Elwes. But young Cary preferred the New York stages of Sarah Lawrence over the painting studio.
He made his film debut in Another Country in 1984. He shared the screen with Rupert Everett and proved that his square jaw suited British period dramas. Soon he caught Hollywood's attention.
He spent months training in fencing with both hands to shoot The Princess Bride in 1987. Director Rob Reiner wanted absolute realism in the duels. Elwes and Mandy Patinkin practiced until their movements were mechanical and precise.
The movie flopped at its box office release.
It was the home video market that rescued the film from oblivion. But by then Elwes was already looking for roles far from swords. In 1989 he worked on Glory alongside Denzel Washington in a much more restrained part.
Mel Brooks called him in 1993 to headline the cast of Robin Hood: Men in Tights. The director wanted someone who could poke fun at the action heroes of the era. Elwes accepted because he knew his leading-man image needed a dose of self-parody.
Audiences took years to get the joke.
The nineties were a mix of big-budget productions and standout supporting roles. She appeared in Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1992, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. And in 1996, she joined the cast of Twister.
Nobody expected that result.
In 2004 he accepted a role in an independent horror film with a ridiculously small budget. It was titled Saw. The shoot lasted just eighteen days, and for most of it Elwes was chained to a pipe in a filthy bathroom.
That project brought in millions and revived his presence in the industry. But Elwes had to fight in court for the box office percentages he was owed. The legal battle dragged on for years while the franchise kept growing.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2019 he joined the third season of Stranger Things to play Mayor Larry Kline. His ability to embody despicable yet charming characters was still intact. Audiences connected with that mix of charisma and political corruption.
Christopher McQuarrie recruited him for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in 2023. Elwes played Denlinger in a global espionage plot that required a strong institutional presence. Shoots for these blockbusters tend to be chaotic because of constant script changes.
In 2024 he worked on The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare with Guy Ritchie. The production used locations in Turkey to recreate secret World War II operations. The film's budget topped 60 million dollars.
