Judd Nelson arrived at the casting for The Breakfast Club in 1984 with a switchblade and an attitude that bordered on criminal. It wasn't a prop. The actor wanted to intimidate the director to prove that the role of John Bender rightfully belonged to him.
He was born in Portland in 1959 into a family of lawyers and judges. That strict upbringing soon clashed with his time at the Stella Adler Conservatory in New York. There, he learned that acting wasn't about pretending but about inhabiting conflict.
And the gamble paid off.
Hughes nearly fired him during the shoot because of the disdainful way Nelson treated Molly Ringwald off camera. The actor argued that he needed to keep his character's tension twenty-four hours a day. That raw intensity is precisely what earned him the status of spiritual leader of the Brat Pack in 1985.
But massive success often brings a suffocating typecasting, which Nelson tried to break right away. Instead of repeating the high school rebel formula, he went off to shoot St. Elmo's Fire that same year. He played an ambitious, cynical young Republican who was after power in Washington.
The industry never forgives a rebel for growing up.
In 1986 he made a decision that baffled his agents when he voiced Hot Rod in The Transformers: The Movie. That foray into animation became a recurring refuge in the decades that followed. Nelson soon understood that his raspy voice had as much commercial value as his defiant stare.
In 1991 he landed his role in New Jack City. In this crime thriller he played Nick Peretti and worked side by side with Ice-T. It was a serious attempt to shake off the teen image of the eighties and break into crime cinema in the new decade.
At the end of the nineties his pace of work became frantic, though less selective. Between 1996 and 1999 he took part in the TV comedy Suddenly Susan alongside Brooke Shields. That move gave him financial stability but kept him away from the major auteur projects in Hollywood.
It marked the end of his era as a box-office draw.
Nelson never stopped working, because his work ethic is that of a craftsman of the supporting role. In 2013 he won back the favor of specialized critics with his appearance in the series Nikita. His ability to play authoritarian and morally ambiguous men was refined over the years.
In 2015 he joined the cast of the series Empire as Billy Beretti. In this Fox production he played the owner of a rival record label, proving that cynicism is his best acting tool. Young audiences once again put a face to his name, even if many didn't remember his past at Shermer High.
Because the actor prefers the anonymity of independent shoots to the red carpets of Los Angeles. In 2018 he took part in the film Billionaire Boys Club, playing Ryan Hunt. It's a curious project, since it marked an indirect return to the theme of youthful ambition that he explored early in his career.
He writes scripts and books under a pseudonym to avoid the scrutiny of his famous name. In 2021 he shot the thriller Girl in the Basement under the direction of Elisabeth Röhm. The film was shot entirely in confined locations to keep post-production costs under one million dollars.
