Synopsis of 1923

In 1923, the Dutton family struggles to hold on in the mountainous American West of Montana, a region hit by Prohibition, a prolonged drought and the first effects of the Great Depression, which reach the state years before the 29 Wall Street Crash. The series, created by Taylor Sheridan for Paramount+, follows a new generation of the clan, determined to keep their home and way of life in an increasingly hostile environment. Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford lead the cast as Cara and Jacob Dutton, the most seasoned members of a family that refuses to give up the land it considers its own. The conflict arises from the economic and climate pressure on the ranch and from the threats surrounding those who refuse to leave.

Trivia about 1923

The series premiere drew 7.4 million viewers across linear TV and streaming, making it the biggest premiere in Paramount+ history.

Each episode was expected to cost between $30 and $35 million, and the series was planned for two seasons of eight episodes each.

Some of the scenes set aboard the ocean liner RMS Majestic were filmed on the RMS Queen Mary, now a floating hotel docked in Long Beach, California.

Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren had already worked together on The Mosquito Coast 36 years before joining this project.

Filming on the second season was delayed by the 2023 writers' strike and the SAG-AFTRA strike that same year.

Helen Mirren won the Critics' Choice Super Award and the Satellite Award, and the series has racked up nominations in several production and acting categories.

The second-season finale drew 14 million global viewers in its first seven days, 41% more than the first-season finale.

The second season was conceived as the series finale, and Paramount also announced the development of 1944, another spin-off in the Yellowstone universe set after 1923.
