Isabel May

Three Years of Silence in Santa Monica

Isabel May wasn't born with a contract in hand or from a family of California actors. Her parents agreed to move from Santa Monica to an apartment in Los Angeles only after she finished ninth grade and promised she would take acting seriously. But the industry didn't welcome her with open arms.

She spent three full years auditioning without landing a single role.

It was a complete drought that ended in 2018 thanks to a Netflix series titled Alexa & Katie. The producers were looking for someone who could carry a teen comedy about cancer without sliding into cheap sentimentality. May landed the role of Katie Cooper and showed a natural comedic rhythm that no prestigious school had taught her.

Her training came from pure, hard-won observation. She had no prior experience on film sets, but she learned to move in front of the camera by repeating takes and studying everyone else's mistakes.

Then came the opportunity to enter the world of Young Sheldon.

She played Veronica Duncan between 2018 and 2020. It was a supporting role meant to test the hormones of Sheldon's brother, but she gave her a depth that wasn't written into the original script. That period taught her how commercial television worked before she made the leap to raw drama.

The voice that narrated the origin of the myth

Taylor Sheridan is a man who trusts his instincts over the recommendations of agents. When he saw Isabel May in an audition for a different project, he knew she was Elsa Dutton. It didn't matter that she didn't know how to ride a horse or that her look was too urban for a late nineteenth-century Western.

In 2021, 1883 was released, and audiences saw a performance that carried the entire prequel to Yellowstone.

May carried the narrative weight of ten brutal episodes in which her character loses her innocence as the wagon train moves west. Critics noticed her ability to convey physical pain without saying a word. Her per-episode salary reflected the status of an actress who no longer had to audition at crowded casting calls.

But her connection to the franchise didn't end when her character died on screen.

Sheridan brought her back in 2022 to voice 1923. Her omniscient narration connected the different generations of the Dutton family and gave the series a lyrical tone that set it apart from any other rural drama. It was a technical decision that worked because her voice was already part of the franchise's DNA.

Studio Contracts and the Leap into Genre Films

The move from television to film is often a treacherous path for many young actors. May handled it by taking part in I Want You Back in 2022, a romantic comedy where she explored a much lighter register. It was a strategic move to keep the industry from typecasting her exclusively in period roles or intense dramas.

James Gunn set her sights on her for the new DC universe.

In 2024, her casting in Superman was confirmed, with the release set for July 2025. She plays Cat Grant, the gossip columnist at the Daily Planet. The role calls for electric energy and quick-witted delivery, skills May had already honed in her early years at Netflix.

Filming the newsroom scenes in Cleveland required a multimillion-dollar logistical effort.

She also got involved in independent projects such as The Moon & Back, shot in 2022, where she plays a young woman who discovers a script written by her late father. Smaller stories like this are the kind she tends to choose to balance her presence in big studio blockbusters.

Production of the film Sunflower for Lionsgate was scheduled with a tight budget of $25 million.
