Peter Stormare stands five feet, eleven inches tall and has a gaze that intimidates even the most seasoned casting directors. Born in Kumla, Sweden, as Rolf Peter Ingvar Storm in 1953. Before becoming the face of evil in Hollywood, he was the protégé of Ingmar Bergman at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.
Bergman directed him in Shakespeare plays for eleven years in a row. Stormare learned there that silence communicates much more than shouting. But the Swedish theater soon felt too small for him, and he decided to try his luck in New York without speaking English well.
In 1996, the Coen brothers cast him as Gaear Grimsrud in Fargo. That performance as a taciturn criminal who ends up feeding his partner into a wood chipper earned him his definitive ticket into the American film industry.
The public never forgot his face.
And the industry didn't either. Stormare never sought to be the film's leading man, preferring roles as odd, nihilistic or outright unhinged guys. In 1998, he worked with the Coens again in The Big Lebowski, playing a German musician who just wanted a ransom paid.
He worked with Steven Spielberg on The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997. There he played Dieter Stark, a character who is devoured by tiny dinosaurs in an agonizing scene. He earned a six-figure salary for just a few minutes on screen.
His portrayal of Lucifer in Constantine in 2005 lasted less than ten real minutes. Yet those barefoot feet dripping with tar and that spotless white suit remain the most iconic depiction of the devil in film this century. Stormare improvised several of the gestures that unsettled Keanu Reeves during the filming of the final scene.
It was a masterclass in acting economics.
In 2005, he joined the cast of Prison Break as the mobster John Abruzzi. The show became a global phenomenon, but Stormare asked for his character to be killed off in the second season. He wanted to return to his music projects with his band Blonde from Fargo and did not like being tied to a long TV contract.
Because for him, acting is a technical craft and not a spiritual quest. So he alternates big productions with B movies and doesn't read newspaper reviews. In 2014, he lent his voice and face to the video game Until Dawn, where he played a disturbing psychiatrist.
Stormare never looks back.
In 2017, he reunited with Keanu Reeves for John Wick: Chapter 2, playing Abram Tarasov with a restraint that recalled his early days in Swedish theater. In 2023, he voiced characters in the Destiny 2 expansion and appeared in the thriller The Ritual Killer.
For 2025, he has the release of Monday scheduled and remains involved in content production through his company Stormare Creative. He lives in Los Angeles but keeps his residence in Sweden to get away from the noise of the studios. In 2024, his estimated net worth exceeded 5 million dollars thanks to smart management of his image rights.
That same year, his production company closed a distribution deal for several animated projects aimed at the Asian market.
