Synopsis of Longmire

Walt Longmire is the sheriff of the fictional Absaroka County, Wyoming. His wife died a year ago, and he hides his grief behind a facade of bravado and sarcasm. His lifelong friend, Henry Standing Bear, is a Cheyenne who knows the tribal police well, a force with authority within reservation limits except in capital crimes. Walt is preparing to run for reelection and has left most of the work to his deputies, Branch Connally and The Ferg. Branch is also running to unseat him and is secretly dating Cady, Walt's grown daughter, who fears her father has been stuck for years. The series, created by John Coveny and Hunt Baldwin, follows Walt's political rivalry and the crimes that come to the county.

Trivia about Longmire

Longmire premiered as the most-watched original series premiere on A&E, with 4.1 million total viewers.

A&E canceled the series after its third season even though it was the network's highest-rated original series, with nearly 6 million viewers per episode.

Netflix picked up the series about three months after its cancellation by A&E and confirmed it would film additional episodes.

The end of season two paid tribute in the opening credits to the Granite Mountain Hotshots, the firefighting crew that helped protect the area where Walt's house is filmed.

Although the story is set in northern Wyoming, the series was filmed in several locations in New Mexico, including Santa Fe, Eagle Nest, and Las Vegas.

The pilot episode was nominated for an Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America in 2013, and its script was written by Hunt Baldwin and John Coveny.

The 2013 wildfires in the Valles Caldera National Preserve interrupted production of the series, after three fires broke out within a three-week period, two of them simultaneously.

The renewal for a sixth season was announced at the same time Netflix confirmed it would be the last season of “Longmire,” which ended in 2017 after six seasons.
