Adolfo Larrue Martinez III was born in California in 1948, and his first ambition had nothing to do with scripts. He wanted to become a professional baseball player. But fate took a turn when he won a talent contest at age twelve, singing at the Hollywood Bowl. That night of applause ended his sports dream and pushed him straight into recording studios.
He started working in television as a teenager. In 1968, he landed a supporting role in the series The Young Jerks, and shortly after he appeared in the Western The Cowboys alongside John Wayne in 1972. That shoot taught him that physical endurance was just as important as memory.
And the gamble paid off.
During the 1970s, Martinez worked steadily in action and police drama productions. In 1978 he appeared in the series The Incredible Hulk, and in 1981 he took part in Falcon Crest. His look fit what casting directors wanted for characters with Mexican and Native American heritage. But the real leap in scale came with a long-term contract in the middle of the decade.
In 1984, the actor accepted the role of Cruz Castillo in the daily soap opera Santa Barbara. It was a risky decision because the soap opera format tended to trap performers in an endless loop of overacting. Martinez chose the opposite and brought a restraint to the genre that had not been seen until then.
Thanks to that approach, he won an Emmy Award in 1990 for Outstanding Lead Actor.
The workload was brutal. They shot one episode a day, and scripts arrived just hours before filming. In 1992 he decided to leave the series to pursue projects with a more complex technical structure. So he moved into legal drama with L.A. Law, playing attorney Daniel Morales until 1994.
The industry respected him for his punctuality.
In 1996, he joined the cast of the suspense series Profiler, playing Agent Nick Cooper for four years. Martinez avoided the clichés of the Latino hero and preferred to build characters known for their intelligence or institutional authority. In 2000, he appeared in several episodes of General Hospital, and in 2003 he joined For the People.
In 2012, the actor landed a project that deeply connected with his cultural roots. He played Jacob Nighthorse in the series Longmire. The character was a local businessman at odds with the county sheriff, with a morally complex, gray-area sense of ethics. The show stayed on the air until 2017 and allowed Martinez to work on location in New Mexico.
But his work did not stop after the end of the modern-day Western series.
In 2022, he appeared in the action film Ambulance, directed by Michael Bay. It was a high-intensity shoot in which he played Papi in front of cameras moving at extreme speeds. In 2023, he joined the cast of the second season of Dark Winds, where he brought to life Sheriff Gordo Sena.
In 2024, he played Master Pakku in the adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender for Netflix. Filming this production required heavy use of high-resolution LED screens and state-of-the-art digital effects. Syndication deals for his earlier work continue to generate recurring annual earnings for his personal fortune.
