Enrique Tomás Delgado Jr. was born in New York City on September 15, 1933. His parents were Puerto Rican and ran a restaurant in Bedford-Stuyvesant, but they decided to move back to the island when little Enrique was only eight years old. There he discovered his calling after playing a turtle in a school play.
In 1954, he returned to the United States to study acting on a scholarship at the Pasadena Playhouse. During those years he shared classes with Linda Cristal and Gene Hackman while trying to carve out a place in an industry that only offered him roles as criminals or servants.
But the system was rigid about Latino surnames. His agent warned him that Delgado sounded too specific and that casting offices would shut the door on him before they ever saw him act.
So he decided to look for a surname that sounded Anglo-Saxon but kept some Mediterranean melody. He chose Darrow after spotting it on a list of famous lawyers.
The risk was total.
In 1967, David Dortort was looking for an actor for a supporting role in a new Western series. He had seen Henry in a stage play titled The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit and was captivated by his physical energy.
Dortort offered him the role of Manolito Montoya in The High Chaparral. On paper, the character wasn't the lead, but Henry brought a mix of mischief and elegance that broke television's genre conventions.
And the gamble paid off.
Henry Darrow became the first actor of Puerto Rican descent to land a major role in a top-rated series without falling into offensive stereotypes. Manolito was a gentleman, a warrior and a charmer who never needed permission to own the screen.
Darrow's connection to the character of Zorro is unique in the history of American production. In 1981, he gave his voice to the hero in the animated series The New Adventures of Zorro.
But he didn't stop there.
In 1983, he starred in the comedy Zorro and Son for Disney, playing an older Diego de la Vega. Years later, in 1990, he returned to the franchise to play Alejandro de la Vega, the protagonist's father, in the version filmed entirely in Spain.
Beyond horses and sunset showdowns, Henry sought stability in daytime soap operas. In 1990, he won a Daytime Emmy for his work on Santa Barbara, playing Rafael Castillo.
He was the first Latino actor to win this award in his category.
Henry didn't just want to act. In 1972, he founded the Ethnic Minorities Committee of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) to pressure studios into giving non-white performers access to complex characters.
In 2012, he published his biography titled Henry Darrow: Lightning in the Bottle, in which he detailed the technical difficulties of shooting in deserts with extreme temperatures.
He died of natural causes on March 14, 2021, at his home in Wilmington, North Carolina.
