The Weight of a Last Name in Chicago

She was born in Chicago in the spring of 1982 and grew up surrounded by law. Her parents were prestigious lawyers, but she chose the piano and the stage from a very young age. In 2005, she graduated from Middlebury College after attending several acting and classical music schools.

And the plan worked.

Before breaking into national television, she worked on short films and experimental theater productions on the East Coast. Her brothers Clark and Andy also went into show business, so a creative atmosphere at home was the norm. In 2008, she landed the role that would permanently change the course of her career.

Lex Luthor's Legacy

She arrived in Vancouver in 2008 to fill the void left by Michael Rosenbaum in Smallville. Playing Tess Mercer was no easy task, because the show's fans were relentless with the new characters who tried to replace the original villains. For four seasons she carried the weight of LuthorCorp with an icy stare and total physical control.

She signed a contract for 46 episodes that ended up being many more thanks to audiences embracing her character on The CW. On that shoot, she learned to manage the pacing of genre television and the pressure of productions with complex visual effects. The series ended in 2011, and Freeman soon sought a radical change of pace to avoid being typecast in science fiction.

But Freeman doesn't just stay in front of the camera.

In 2012, she traded glass-walled offices for riding boots in Longmire. She played Cady Longmire until 2017 and weathered the show's move from the A&E network to Netflix. It was a grueling shoot in the New Mexico landscapes that helped her understand the rhythms of rural drama and the neo-Western narrative.

From the Wyoming Plains to Religious Absurdity

Danny McBride called her in 2019 to play Amber Gemstone in the HBO comedy The Righteous Gemstones. The character handles firearms and preaches the word of God with the same intensity. In this production, Freeman explores dark humor and satire about American megachurches alongside actors such as John Goodman.

The show's average audience topped 4 million viewers per episode during its second season. In 2021, she appeared in the film The Forever Purge under the direction of Everardo Gout. The project marked her foray into mainstream horror, with a supporting role that was nonetheless key to the tension of the second act.

In 2023, the Gemstones series was renewed for a fourth season after strong numbers in international markets. Cassidy Freeman balances these shoots with his side as a musician in the band The Real D'Coy, where he plays piano and sings with his brothers.

Production on each episode of her current series usually takes about eight days of technical shooting.
