Synopsis of 1883

1883 is a Western miniseries created by Taylor Sheridan and aired on Paramount+. After the Civil War, the Dutton family leaves Tennessee in hopes of finding a better life. In Fort Worth, Texas, they join a wagon train making a long, grueling journey west, bound for Oregon. The Duttons follow that route intending to settle later in Montana. Elsa, the 17-year-old teenage daughter, narrates much of the story in first person and at first sees the trip as a great adventure. Sam Elliott stars as Shea Brennan, a former Union Army captain who works for the Pinkerton agency and leads the expedition. Brennan constantly reminds the group of the dangers ahead, and the series explores how a family and their fellow travelers must survive the distance.

«The road west was paved with blood.»

Trivia about 1883

Taylor Sheridan completed the pilot script in a week, after spotting Isabel May while she auditioned for Mayor of Kingstown.

Paramount signed Isabel May, who was little known at the time, before Sheridan finished the script, because according to the creator the series wouldn't work without her.

The producers built a new permanent Western town with 26 structures at Yellowstone Film Ranch.

Isabel May explained that Sheridan wanted to preserve the authenticity of the era, so the actresses did not wear makeup or shave their underarms, since women didn't start shaving until the 1920s.

Faith Hill described the shoot as the most physically and mentally demanding the crew had ever undertaken, amid intense cold in Montana.

The series was allotted a budget of $175 million, but was ultimately produced for $169 million.

Rotten Tomatoes recorded an approval rating of 89% based on 27 critic reviews.

Taylor Sheridan conceived «1883» as a closed ten-hour story, so the series will not have a second season; the project announced as a continuation was «1932», later retitled «1923».
