Before stepping onto a television set, LaMonica Garrett made a living taking hits on a Slamball court. That hybrid sport, somewhere between basketball and martial arts, gave him the physical presence that casting directors in Los Angeles would later look for. In that pro league, he earned the nickname The Beast for his ability to dominate the air and make extreme contact.
That physical display was no pose. Garrett soon realized that his look was his best calling card in an industry crowded with interchangeable faces. But the road was not direct. For years he picked up minor roles on shows like One Tree Hill and CSI: Miami while refining an acting technique that kept him from being typecast as just a bodyguard or thug.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2011, he landed the role of Deputy Sheriff Cane in Sons of Anarchy. For three seasons, he worked on one of the most demanding productions in cable television. That experience let him closely observe how the pace of a hit series is managed. He wasn't chasing immediate stardom but rather learning the mechanics of the craft from inside the set.
The real breakthrough came in 2018 when The CW entrusted him with a dual role in its superhero universe. Playing Mar Novu and the Anti-Monitor posed a major logistical and physical challenge. Garrett spent months under prosthetics and heavy armor to bring to life the central figures of the Crisis on Infinite Earths event between 2019 and 2020.
It was a purely technical move.
Unlike other actors who shy away from heavy makeup, Garrett embraced the opportunity. He knew these characters would give him global visibility that supporting roles in police dramas could not offer. His portrayal of an impassive cosmic entity showed he could carry the weight of a complex plot without barely moving a muscle in his face.
As early as 2016, he had already tested the waters of political thrillers with Designated Survivor. There, he brought to life Mike Ritter, the Secret Service agent tasked with protecting the president. On that show, he crossed paths with Kiefer Sutherland and learned the importance of restraint on screen. His character relied more on gaze and body language than on lengthy dialogue.
His turn toward prestige drama came when Taylor Sheridan recruited him for the Yellowstone universe. In 2021, he played Thomas in the prequel 1883. The role of a former Union soldier turned cowboy required prior training at camps in Texas to learn to handle cattle and fire period weapons with historical accuracy.
The desert shows no mercy.
For that shoot, Garrett had to spend months on horseback in extreme temperatures. The authenticity Sheridan demanded forced the actor to step away from the comforts of traditional production trailers. That raw visual style allowed him to leave behind his sci-fi actor image for good and move into gritty, adult drama.
In 2023, he reunited with the same creative team on Special Ops: Lioness, playing Tucker. In this military espionage production, he shared the screen with Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman. Filming the show's second season in 2024 kept the tactical realism that Garrett has made his trademark in the industry.
In 2024, filming the second batch of episodes of Special Ops: Lioness required a deployment of 150 crew members on location in Mallorca and Texas.
